Performing observability to tackle DER integration
The high penetration of DERs can lead to voltage and frequency fluctuations, power quality issues, and overloading of distribution equipment.
Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that MV networks are equipped with appropriate monitoring and control systems that can effectively manage the integration of DERs while maintaining grid stability and reliability.
In accordance with EU guidelines, some countries have started to define regulations aimed at visibility and monitoring for medium-sized plants connected to the MV grid.
In Italy, for example, ARERA 540/2021/R/EEL requirement establishes a new technical adjustment obligation for owners of electricity production plants equal to or greater than 1 MW in medium voltage. The obligation applies to both new and existing systems.
Monitor, measure and communicate directly to TSO
GALILEO enables observability of distributed energy resources connected to the MV grid and the communication of the related information in near real time to TSO.
It manages the direct measurements on the state of power plant performance acquired by the Centralized Plant Controller (CCI) device through a dedicated remote terminal unit (TPTGD, like TPT2020 Lite). It is compliant with IEC60870-5-104, IEC61850 TLS, and Kafka protocols.
The CCI takes direct measurements on the performance of plants and enables several functions:
MONITORING: collecting plant info and generating units underlying it to ensure observability for DSO and TSO.
COORDINATION of the different elements of the plant to make them work according to the CEI 0-16 standards.
PRESENTATION to the DSO network, in the point of service, of the plant as consisting of a single equivalent generator considering the characteristics of the generation and storage system.
Ready to market, customizable, compliant with international protocols
Customizable: the solution is compliant with Italian regulations, but it could be easily customizable to work in different countries.
Raw Data Extraction: Search and visualize raw measures transmitted by each CCI/CA/IOA of every Galileo System.
Chart Visualization: Visualization of charts for each Operative Center representing partial availability KPIs (one sample each 10 minutes) calculated for the Galileo system and TSO channels.
KPI Visualization and monitoring: Search and visualize historical KPIs (daily, monthly, and yearly) availability calculated for the Galileo system and TSO channels.
Alarm flag for sub-threshold performance: Each KPI has a flag alarm associated if its value is below the configured thresholds.
